The Goddess

‍In the early days when sailors braved the unpredictable waves and weather in the hopes of a blessed catch, or just to cross the waters in order to reach a faraway destination, Janna’s name would become a sacred mantra, her spirit birthed from their ever growing belief of her.

Prayers and offerings were made in her honor, shrines built along with their desire for a peaceful voyage. Some say the whistling and/or the appearance of a blue bird in the skies signalled the presence of the goddess. Janna would be there to pave a safe way for those who deemed it worthy. Sailors with ill intentions like pirates would have a different fate befall them - storms and violent winds would destroy their fleets, sending them down to the seafloor in ruins.

As men made more discoveries and advanced in the scientific field, they found effective ways of improving passing through the waters. Canals were built, developed functions prepped to counter the unforgiving waves away from the principal paths, the deceitful harmony of chemistry and machinery the very blood and veins of the body that moved like clockwork.

Little by little, the citizens forgot about Janna, discarded the thought of an unpredictable deity of the winds, causing her power to wane into almost nothingness. Every time she would attempt to summon the great winds that could be felt throughout the vast sea, she could only conjure a pitiful draft. Shrines pecked on by seagulls, offerings nearly inexistent, she could feel her might dissipating into the heavens, the life in her color disappearing until a tint of gray contaminated her pure porcelain form. She could be no more than a common human at that point. She roamed the shores to preserve what very little power she still possessed.

Then a disaster struck the lands. No one knew of the cause. The events that took place were recorded as some of the most destructive in history. Whether it was a natural disaster or one triggered by the constant wounding of the earth’s flesh... Or perhaps human error... There was no explanation to the chain of earthquakes that destroyed the canals, the buildings, the hopes and dreams of those who thought they’d established something new and beneficial for a better tomorrow.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍The destruction caused thousands of people to drown, to be crushed beneath the fallen debris, but most of all to choke and suffer from the noxious fumes spewed by the broken chemical containers. Highly dangerous in just small doses, those who failed to wear proper protection were sure to meet their end. During the chaos, that was when the multitude of victims prayed for mercy. Prayed for her.

In a sudden burst of energy, Janna regained her powers, stronger than ever before. She knew where the calls of help came from, their begging hearts crying to a guardian, the single one who could do something to turn fate’s table around. She summoned powerful monsoon winds that swept away every single droplet of chemical substances looming in the air. Shining like a beacon of hope in the middle of the fray, Janna’s existence was acknowledged by the people of what we now know to be Zaun and Piltover, and perhaps others who’ve heard of the tale of the Great Gale.

However, she disappeared as soon as she appeared. Since then, no one saw Janna in her mythic form. A lady in white who possessed a staff. Every now and then, the people would see the same, legendary blue bird that flew along the industrial streets, reminding them always of the wind elemental.

The hextech mage

After the Great Gale, Janna came to the conclusion that she wished to understand humans more, to know what made them tick, know how important this technology was for them and if it were possible for people to balance their need for progress and their faith in the unknown. There was something extraordinary about them despite the way they had forgotten her at a certain point that she almost ceased to exist, but she held no resentment for them. She simple wished to learn.

Thus, she made the decision to live amongst them.

Disguising herself as a simple, elven woman whose parents died in a shipwreck when she was young, she entered the streets of Zaun and investigated. The environment all on its own was enough to make the mage wretch and heave during her first few moments. The air was nothing she deemed healthy for any pair of lungs and the constant presence of smoke and other pollutants was quite bothersome.

Hidden from plain sight, she would sometimes summon currents of air to cleanse the place of the Zaun Gray and let the citizens breathe properly, even if it lasted for just a day or two. Progress came with a price, she supposed, and so she decided to learn about the technology that made the city how it was that day.

Her sources eventually lead her feet to Piltover where she learned about Hextech. In secret, she would be as silent as the gentlest of breezes at night, staying in libraries and laboratories to read material and observe machinery, blueprints, reports. She meant no harm and simply desired to understand so she could help in bettering Zaun’s situation. Sadly, the discovery of the heinous experiments that took place underground made her doubt that she alone could ever make a change. Still, she did not abandon Zaun as her ‘hometown’. The people needed her to be their hope, even if she did all she could in secret.

She attended Piltover’s Progress Day one time, the same as every year since she took an interest in understanding this world she live in. It was there that she met Jayce, the renowned founder of Hextech Corp. Despite the rudeness that people irked, Janna didn’t seem to mind. The pair engaged in conversation for hours on end, practically spending most of the day in each other’s company. She’d told him the same ‘white lie’ she told everyone else, that she was a lone woman living in Zaun as a... Well, researcher this time.

They kept in touch after Progress Day, but it only took Jayce a month and a half to consider asking her aid in his work. The proposition to which Janna agreed to without a second thought became her new past time and a way to get by easier in the neighboring city. She had no problems housing herself as she did not always stay in Zaun for shelter, but now that she earned money, she easily adapted to life as a human. She took a place for herself in a decent neighborhood near an orphanage where she could work on her personal projects.

Magic

W I N D M A G I C : As the embodiment of air, Janna is capable of conjuring and controlling the element that surrounded the world. From fearsome storms to the gentlest summer breeze, she is the one who guides sailors, blows dandelions, punishes those worthy of it, rids Zaun of impurities. In her human form, she may still use this magic though at a limited amount, i.e. she cannot summon tornadoes without showing her true form as a divinity. The wind magic may trickle discreetly every now and then whenever she uses her Hextech staff, adding force into her attacks.

H E X T E C H : It was in Zaun where she crafted the Hextech staff she uses as a replacement for her real magical staff (she felt lacking without it). With the arcane stone where the weapon extracts its power from, she can execute both wind and energy attacks. Her energy spells exude threat in the form of electric damage. She also has a defensive setting that allows her to create a forcefield around her. She may protect an ally with it as long as she is near them. Unlike the shield she can create with her wind magic, this Hextech one is created in a dome-like formation and directly erupts from the arcane stone. Therefore, Janna must be close to her ally if she wants to conjure the shield around them. The Hextach staff cannot be used by anyone else but Janna due to the handprint recognition she installed for security measures.

League War AU

In the first part of the War AU, Janna escaped Zaun after a long while of hiding underground and making use of what rations she had at her disposal in order to survive. With all magic on Runeterra absorbed by Viktor during the first great invasion of the Glorious Revolution, she was devoid of most of her wind magic and had to turn to the securely preserved magic of her Hextech staff in order to fight back whenever necessary.

Dangerously trudging through the land stripped of life and littered with the metal bones of fallen machines, she was found by Varus (Arctic Ops) near the border of Piltover’s outskirts and taken back to the main base. There, she made it her duty to help the Resistance in their mission to defeat Viktor and reclaim Runeterra.

One time, the mage decided to set off on her own in search of Battlecast pieces to conduct research on and gain more information on how they were built, if their metal could be use for their own benefit even if they were no more than recycled scraps on the graveyard of corrupted robotics. Three Battlecast scouts were present in the area, and when Janna was in deep trouble, Jayce (Full Metal) arrived just in time to save her. It was then that she realized he, too, was part of the Resistance.

Weeks passed and Janna was tasked to go on a mission with Varus and Sarah Fortune (Gun Goddess) to reclaim a cure that could save one fo their comrades from a life-threatening illness. However, before they could leave, Sarah fell victim to one of the traitors that gave away the base’s location, the gunslinger’s leg shot and impaled in the Intensive Care Unit of the infirmary after she shared her last words with Kai’Sa (Bullet Angel).

With units of Battlecast moving in for an invasion that would cost them the lives of comrades such as Varus and Illaoi (Resistance), Janna - with a heavily injured shoulder - was forced to retreat along with everyone else into a base along the northern border of Demacia near the Serpentine River.

Now in a base that was once a factory meant for the fabrication of Program robots, she discovered the long-abandoned Soraka (Program) and brought her to life thanks to the urging of the curious yet malevolent AI of the Lissandra (Program) robot that was never downloaded into its shell of metal for it required the intervention of an outside user.

At the moment, she is working towards a common goal with the remaining Resistance members.

Victorious Janna

There are divine beings that reside in the most hidden sanctuaries of the world. Beings of power, of magic, of untold fury. Warlords, kings, brave knights alike all seek these beings to ask for their blessing before a day of confrontation. Legends say that if one gains the favor of these brings, their victory is assured.

These divinities are the Victorious.

Each hold magic unique to their own. Upon blessing the newcomer, a ritual is performed before he returns to his homeland. An incantation in exchange for an offering, which may vary depending on the Victorious. Each of them grants different powers and thus asks for different tokens.

An example is the Storm’s Fury, the Victorious Janna.

Her blessing is of agility, speed, the power to move with pinpoint precision and be as deadly as a hurricane. In her case, the ritual is done through song, through the Hymn of Fervor which absorbs any payment of string or wind instruments, Mythril, coral, fish, and other bounties of the sea, or precious silk into her sanctuary. Deeds such as saving her wind elementals from being trapped in the wilderness or by humans also count as payment. She may send someone on a quest before granting her blessing.

Though, payment is not all there is to gain the Tempest’s approval. She is capable of seeing through the human vessel and judging whether one’s heart is of good intent or not. Even with the greatest token to offer, she can and will refuse to aid someone if their only goal is to kill for sport, for example.

She does not always keep the items that are given to her. She distributes them among the unsuspecting people. Some may just find a bulk of silk or a golden flute by their doorstep. She keeps small items or those she may find useful for herself.

A person may not seek two Victorious at the same time. Janna will know if one has already gained the favor of another Victorious, and vice versa. Granting one the power of two or more will result in greater conflict. Once the war is over, the blessing will dissipate and the men under its effects will become normal once more.

The song is sung in a dialect unique to deities. Humans have tried decoding the meaning of the song and the language itself but have been unsuccessful. The song speaks of her undying devotion towards those who seek her - and succeed in doing so. The Victorious are extremely difficult to seek and many have perished before even laying eyes on their ethereal forms.
